Dangerous Cargo Management - Cargo Inspections

E-mail Print PDF

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires a truck driver to complete a systematic check every day before taking his truck out on the road.

Truck drivers make roadside inspections part of their daily stops. A roadside inspection gives the driver an on-the-spot safety check to make sure the load complies with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. If it does not comply with the regulations and an Out of Service violation is issued, they will not be able to continue until it is corrected.

Taking the time to inspect the truck and the cargo can stop a potential accident; it can save the life of an individual in a serious accident. If you were involved in a trucking accident and suspect the driver did not take the time to inspect his cargo causing it to shift and splatter all over the roadway or causing the truck to be imbalanced, contact The Truck Accident Attorneys of the Garcia Law Firm. We are familiar with cargo-related truck accidents and we will fight for your rights.

Roadside Inspection
Each truck driver should make sure that they always have their Commercial Driver’s License, logbook (should be up to date), medical certificate, periodic inspection paperwork, bill of lading and emergency response information for Hazmat shipments.

The inspection consists of five levels:
• Level 1 – includes a complete vehicle and paperwork review
• Level 2 – includes level 1 requirements, excluding inspectors getting under the vehicle
• Level 3 – paperwork only
• Level 4 – inspection of brakes
• Level 5 – takes place at the carrier

Common Violations
The most common violations consist of improperly secured cargo loads, brake problems, tires, and lights.

Regular cargo inspections keep a driver’s truck safe. By checking the cargo frequently, the trucker can make sure the goods have not shifted and will not fall off the truck. Missing an inspection can cause a serious accident.

If you or your loved one was involved in a serious truck accident and you suspect that the driver did not check his cargo or his truck on a routine stop, contact The Garcia Law Firm at (800) 281-8515; our attorneys will fight to get you what you deserve.
