For those of you who are not familiar with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Share the Road Safely Program, let me explain what it is. The program gives commercial drivers an opportunity to set an example for other drivers to share the road safely. It gives truck drivers an opportunity to improve their professional image.
The No-Zone Campaign, part of this program, is a highway safety initiative that educates drivers about the blind spots around big-rigs and other large trucks. A car can virtually disappear from the view of the truck driver in some instances. Most car drivers are not aware of this. Car drivers are also not always aware that cutting in front of a large truck can cause a serious or fatal accident; it is not easy for a large truck to stop so quickly.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration wants to educate all drivers about road safety to reduce injuries and fatalities caused by accidents with large trucks. They advise commercial truck drivers to drive defensively, give other drivers sufficient room and keep an eye out for the unexpected. If your trucking company is not participating in the Share the Road Safely program, it is time it did. For more information, go to www.nozone.org.
